My name is Sarah Godwin and I am the founder and owner of The Pure Parenting Shop. I am a Texan by birth but was relocated to Erie, PA in 2011 because of my husband's job. I have a background in child development and education having taught several years in an inner-city public school in Houston as well as a preschool before that. My husband and I have one daughter who was born in November 2012 (Frogie) and one son who was born September 2014 (Chirp Chirp). Though at first I was not successful at breastfeeding, I kept at it and now have two healthy breastfed babies, who have always been cloth diapered and worn by both my husband and I.
As I readied myself for my first baby I came to realize how difficult it was to find natural parenting items in Erie. There was nowhere to learn about or buy cloth diapers and though the large chain stores sold baby carriers, they were not the ideal type such as the woven wraps, ring slings, Mai Tais, or Soft Structured Carriers that I was looking for and none of the sales associates could provide any information about babywearing other than what was on the box. My husband encouraged me to "fix" that problem for other mothers in the area and so I began the process of starting The Pure Parenting Shop.
First, to my husband's dismay, I started by buying almost every kind of cloth diaper and trying it on my baby to see how they worked. I also purchased multiple carriers to practice with. In August 2013, I attended a class that allowed me to become a Certified Babywearing Educator in anticipation of opening The Pure Parenting Shop. Natural parenting is very important to me as I try to limit my family's exposure to toxins and other chemicals that are in everything around us. I am also a Certified Lactation Counselor and provide lactation support to families when needed. With my love for teaching I also lead classes throughout the month to help caregivers in the adventure of parenting.
After two years of planning to open a shop I did just that and then after two years of running the shop in Erie, life had other plans for us. My husband's job has moved us back to Houston so we are now starting over in many ways in Houston, TX. We are very happy to be back home in the city we both grew up in and so near to our families. We are also excited to have brought this business to a community we hope to serve for many years to come.
The shop's mission has always been to provide a safe place where caregivers feel comfortable to come and learn about all the great options of modern and natural parenting and that has not changed. Come into the shop today or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
